DANCE ON CAMERA FESTIVAL 40th EDITION
January 4, 2012
It’s time for the city’s major festival of dance on film and video: the 40 Anniversary Edition of Dance on Camera at Lincoln Center January 27 – 31. Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Dance Films Association (DFA), the line-up marks several major anniversaries including DFA, EYE ON DANCE—the long running PBS series on dance created by Jeff Bush and Celia Ipiotis, and Jacob’s Pillow, one of the oldest continuous running dance festivals in the nation.

Opening night cracks open with the World Premiere of JOFFREY: MAVERICKS OF AMERICAN DANCE which will be shown at the Walter Reade Theater and in theaters across the country through a partnership with Emerging Pictures, a leader in bringing live performing arts productions into movie theaters internationally.

The fourteen programs slice through numerous dance genres spotlighting luminaries like Natalia Makarova and Robert Wilson while paying tribute to major dance contributors such as Pilobolus, the Joffrey Ballet, Dance Films Association founded by Susan Braun and EYE ON DANCE. Closing night digs into the colorful NYC nightlife with “Check Your Body At The Door,” a documentary by Sally Sommer that rejoices in the House Dance Culture as it took form through the 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Ballet fans won’t want to miss the film portrait of “Markova: In a Class Of Her Own” by Derek Bailey, or the insightful Balanchine in Paris by Dominique Delouche. History comes to life in the story of Jacob’s Pillow “Never Stand Still” by Ron Honsa; Mis Caminos A Traves de La Danza/My Paths Through Dance by Daniel Cabrero documents the contributions of renowned classical Spanish dancer Marjemma, and a 30th Anniversary EYE ON DANCE Highlights Loop will play throughout the festival in the Furman Gallery.
